Discover art from Asia, Africa, America and Oceania at the Museum Rietberg in Zurich. The largest art museum for non-European cultures in Switzerland is located in the middle of the extensive Rieterpark.
The Museum Rietberg at a glance
The Museum Rietberg in Zurich's Enge district is dedicated to the art of traditional and contemporary cultures from Asia, Africa, America and Oceania. The collection comprises over 23,000 objects and around 37,000 ethnographic photographs. Historic villas and the underground extension "Smaragd" together form the museum complex.
What to experience
Explore the collection and special exhibitions (1.5-2 hours)
In the historic villas and in the "Smaragd" extension you will find permanent and special exhibitions. Highlights include Indian miniature painting, Himalayan Buddhist art and Chinese ceramics. The display depot shows other objects that are not otherwise exhibited.
- Good to know: The display depot is freely accessible to visitors.
- Tip: On Thursdays, the museum is open until 8 p.m.
Walk through the Rieterpark
The 67,000 square metre Rieterpark around the museum invites you to linger. Richard Wagner wrote his music drama "Tristan und Isolde" in the Villa Wesendonck. The café in the former winter garden of Villa Wesendonck also offers outdoor seating in summer.
- Good to know: The park is freely accessible and open all year round.
Attend guided tours and workshops
The museum offers public tours of the collection and special exhibitions, as well as workshops for adults and children. The "Mach mit" offer is aimed specifically at families: Children explore a work of art and then become creative themselves in the open workshop.
