Chasseral–Weissenstein Bike
Overview
Intro
To begin, you descend rapidly from the Weissenstein, Solothurn’s local mountain, down into the valley. The steep climb to the second Jura chain that follows is demanding. You cycle through the typical Jura mountain landscape on undulating terrain to the Laupersdorf Stierenberg mountain, where the final descent to Balsthal awaits.
Description
The Weissenstein is Solothurn’s local mountain. Its magnificent views over the Swiss plateau and to the Alps are impressive, and it is also the starting point for nature-oriented experiences. One of these awaits you now in the form of a fast-paced descent. The unspoilt trail is technically easy to cycle, with around 500 metres descent in elevation to enjoy. You now find yourself in the regional Thal Nature Park. It is perfectly nestled in the mountain ranges of the Solothurn Jura, between the Weissenstein and waterfalls.
Once you reach the valley, you warm up along a stretch on the main road. A long, steep, leg-burning climb then follows, up around 350 metres in elevation over 3.5 kilometres. At Malsenberg, you complete the ascent on the beautiful forest trail. This area is typical Jura. Sunny heights, dry stone walls, cows and species-rich meadows characterise the landscape for the next few kilometres. What is missing is the panorama towards the Alps because you are on the second Jura chain, and the first blocks this view.
After Hinter Brandberg, you continue for a stretch on surfaced road. Past the Mieschegg, you dive back into the typical Jura landscape – so stunning that it’s definitely worth taking a break. If you look upwards, you can spot kites and buzzards competing with the paragliders.
After the beautiful trail comes a longer surfaced stretch to the Laupersdorf Stierenberg mountain. The physically demanding section is now almost over. The final descent lies ahead: It’s a beautiful ride down across a meadow, a forest road and a trail, past ponds at Holzflue and to the destination for this stage in Balsthal. This also completes the entire Chasseral-Weissenstein Bike route.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
