Chaumont Bike
Overview
Intro
This mountain bike tour climbs up to Petit Chaumont from La Coudre over the densely wooded southeast slope. A detour to the Chaumont summit is worthwhile, for the superb view in particular. The route winds along tracks across the northwest slope. At the end, you enjoy another attractive single trail descent.
Description
First you go through the forest, then on a single trail that runs along by the famous Voëns golf course. The trail is also used by hikers here. There is a section on asphalt at Le Maley. A gravel road then runs as far as just before the village of Enges, which is in a panoramic location high above the Swiss plateau plain. You turn around here, and the steady climb towards Chaumont begins. The route runs through dense forest, past fir, spruce and beech trees. The trail branches off after about three kilometres. There now follows a zigzag climb which takes you to the highest point of the route, at 1150 metres, above the first Jura chain.
The route described diverges once again to the right at Petit Chaumont. It is worth taking a detour to the Chaumont summit with its observation tower. The panorama opens out across the Three Lakes Region and the western Swiss Plateau, Lake Murten and Lake Biel. In good weather, the view extends as far as the high Alps with the Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau and Mont Blanc.
The view from the northwest slope is also worth seeing: it sweeps across the Val-de-Ruz and the second Jura ridge. This is followed by descents and flat sections on tracks and trails to Pré Louiset. An attractive and more technically demanding descent, alternating between unsurfaced paths and single trails, leads back to the starting point in la Coudre. Tip: if you want to miss out some of the climb, you can take the cable car to Chaumont. You then reach the described route from a north-easterly direction at Petit Chaumont.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
