Intro
From Canton Fribourg into Canton Vaud, from Châlet du Régiment to Château-d’Oex. In the «balloonists’ Mecca» everything focuses on the hot-air balloon. «Espace Ballon» with activities for all ages as well as permanent and temporary exhibitions.
Description
The Chalet du Soldat is in a magnificent spot downhill from the imposing limestone Gastlosen mountain range. The views of the mountain peaks of the Cheval Blanc, Vanil Noir and Dent de Brenleire in the distance are fantastic. A path leads from here through small patches of scree, woodland and meadows until you reach the Klein Montbach stream. Cross the stream then continue along a gravel road to the pass at La Gueyre. Take one last look at the peaks of the Gastlosen mountain range before starting the descent to the Charmey Gros Mont car park.
Back on a gravel road, the trail leads to Le Sori, where you will start the next climb. You will share this narrow path with horses carrying heavy wheels of cheese down into the valley. After around 15 minutes, you will be able to discern the Ruisseau de Morteys stream on the right-hand side of the valley. One special quality of this stream is that it doesn’t continue flowing further, but instead vanishes underground. In 1928, it was discovered by dyeing the water that the stream only resurfaces 11 days later at the waterfall in Jaun. If nearly eight hours of hiking is too much for you, you can also divide this leg into two parts and spend the night at the Les Marindes mountain cabin, near the headwaters of the mysterious stream.
Or if you choose to keep walking, you will leave the Les Morteys valley enveloped by a magnificent panorama. Take a right and you will be greeted by the peaks surrounding the Gummfluh and Les Diablerets both vying for your attention.
At over five hours, the hike to Château-d’Oex is another long one. Along a sunny gravel road beneath the mountain slopes, you will descend into the valley. On hot summer’s days, make sure to bring enough to drink as the streams may dry up. After around eight hours, this leg comes to an end in the hot air balloon Mecca of Château-d’Oex, where you can grab a well-earned refreshing drink.
