Intro
The limestone crags of the Mythen, a mountain carved thousands of times with a local Swiss Army Knife, the Ibereggpass is steep, marshy the shores of the Sihlsee, won by building a dam and drowning 60 farmsteads so that «the spark of electricity could at last glow in Thal».
Description
It is intended to be compact, flexible and ready for any adventure. That is the high-precision Swiss Army knife. The first ones were supplied to the army in 1891 by the Victoria company (now Victorinox) in Ibach. With the cult knife in your pack, you begin the journey through its homeland. Shortly before the beautiful old town in Schwyz, this stage runs past the Museum of the Swiss Charters of Confederation. The Federal Charter is kept here, under the rocky outcrops of the Mythen. This saw the three original cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden assuring mutual support to one another in 1291.
There are around 30 stately mansions from the 17th and 18th centuries to admire in Schwyz. In the main square, which was rebuilt after a fire in 1642, the baroque church of St. Martin from 1774 and the magnificently painted town hall from 1645 are particularly impressive. When the weather is fine, you can see many paragliders high up on the Mythen mountain range.
You can also go high up by bike: you have to tackle an elevation gain of almost 1,000 metres on today’s stage. The Ibergeregg Pass is fairly steep, with a gradient of up to 14 per cent. Its many bends reveal a superb view down to Lake Lucerne. You are rewarded at the top of the pass in the form of a Muotathal cherry and cream cake
The reward is also an incredible descent through the Ibergeregg cantonal nature reserve. In Ybrig, surrounded by Furggelenstock, Roggenstock and Spirstock, you see flat and upland moors of national importance over an area of around 10 square kilometres. The cranberry fritillary, willow gentian, bog rosemary and the three-toed woodpecker – they are all at home here! The highest municipality in the canton of Schwyz is Oberiberg. The health resort itself is located at an altitude of 1,135 metres and is part of the Ybrig/Hoch-Ybrig local recreational area. You cross the Jessenen Bridge before Unteriberg. The Minster gurgles gently below, only to disappear into Lake Sihl a few kilometres further on.
The Sihlsee lake is in an attractive location in the rustic foothills of the Alps near Einsiedeln. It is worth crossing it at the Willerzell Viaduct to pay a visit to Einsiedeln. A special atmosphere abounds at the largest pilgrimage site in Switzerland. Every year, several hundred thousand pilgrims and tourists visit the huge Benedictine monastery with the collegiate church as well as the Chapel of Grace with the “Black Madonna”. The Klosterplatz is the second largest contiguous church square in Europe after St. Peter’s Square in Rome.
