Jakobsweg Graubünden
Overview
Intro
Steep descent from Scuol to Ftan, with unforgettable views over the «Funtauna da San Giacun» in Bos-cha, and 9th-century hostel ruins before the descent to Ardez –where we recommend a village tour. Guarda is a typical Unterengadin village.
Description
Scuol lies in the wide valley basin of the Inn between the Silvretta Group's mountain ranges in the north and the Engadine Dolomites in the south. Shielded by these mighty mountain ranges, the town is known for its sunny and dry climate. The stage starts at the Scuol-Tarasp railway station and briefly follows the gondola lift, which runs up to the Motta Naluns area.
The hike also leads uphill. You reach Ftan on a gravel road with fantastic views of the peaks to the west. The village burned down almost entirely several times. In the alley of Rontsch, you can easily recognise the different types of architecture. To the north are the typical Engadine houses. Opposite, the palazzi were built by wealthy returnees from the confectionery trade.
Gravel roads and paths lead through dreamy stretches of forest and past huge boulders. Crossing the Tasna valley over a beautiful arched stone bridge, you reach the over thousand-year-old Chanoua ruins. They are arguably the most important structure of a small hamlet. It may have served as a hostel and goods transfer point in earlier times.
A short while later, you reach the well-preserved village of Ardez. Situated on a plateau on the southern slope, Ardez is a model village of the Rhaeto-Romanic language and housing culture. Steep cobblestone streets run between the stately farmhouses with their typically painted and decorated façades. The village is surrounded by lush meadows and mixed forests.
An asphalt road now leads gently uphill again. With magnificent views of the surrounding mountains of the National Park, you cross Bos-cha with its "Funtauna da San Giacun" (St. James spring) and reach Guarda, the village of Schellen-Ursli, one of Switzerland's most famous picture books, which was also made into a film. In the traffic-free "most beautiful end of the world", the well-kept and richly decorated Engadine houses and the silence of the mountains are striking.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
