Intro

The first stage of the Jurapark Aargau route takes you on a journey into living Roman history. Starting leisurely along the Aare, you ride to the moated castle before ascending the gentle hills of the Jura. Fascinating views will reward you for your effort.

Description

The first stage of the Jurapark Aargau route starts in Brugg. Passing the Roman amphitheatre and the old part of Windisch called "Vindonissa", you are already on a journey through time after a few minutes. At the Vindonissa Legionary Trail, you enter the world of the only Roman Legionnaires' camp in Switzerland. Just a few metres further on, another empire has left its mark. The Habsburg monastery of Königsfelden is a mystical place on formerly Roman soil. The colourful Gothic stained-glass windows of the 700-year-old monastery church will amaze you.

Following the Aare downstream, you head towards the moated castle, where the Mittelland's three rivers Aare, Reuss and Limmat come together. From the flat riverside path, the route winds its way slightly uphill towards Oberbözberg, passing the park boundary and entering the Jurapark Aargau. The views of the Alps are fantastic.

Ascents and descents alternate until you reach the wooden Cheisacher Tower a little later. A detour to the viewing platform is worthwhile. The 25-metre tower offers stunning panoramic views of the Alps, the Black Forest and the Vosges Mountains. The trail leads down to the Rhine, past small hamlets and scattered farms. In Laufenburg, the old town, beautifully situated on the banks of the Rhine, beckons for a visit. In the historic centre, you can stroll through winding alleys and discover charming old houses.

Before reaching the end of the stage in Frick, you have to overcome one last climb over the Sulzberg. Frick is one of the most important dinosaur sites in the world. At the dinosaur museum, you can marvel at the complete skeleton of a Plateosaurus that was recovered from a clay pit.
