Intro

This unobstructed hiking trail runs from Ziegelbrücke to Weesen along the Linth River. Besides the stunning view of the Glarus Alps, it offers a fantastic vista of deep blue Lake Walen in Weesen.

Description

The starting point for the route is Ziegelbrücke train station, an important junction station on the Zurich-Chur line. The village, divided by the Linth Canal, is mainly located in the canton of Glarus. The Jenny area dominates here: during the golden age of the textile industry, the company Fritz + Caspar Jenny employed more than 800 people here. The weaving mill closed in 2020. The area has apartments and commercial spaces. It is now listed in the Federal Inventory of Heritage Sites of national importance. The northern district of Ziegelbrücke has only around 50 residents and is part of the canton of St. Gallen. The unobstructed hike towards Weesen also passes through here.

After a short section on the main road, you reach the banks of the Linth. The trail then runs between the Linth and the forested Biberlichopf, a popular viewing point. During archaeological excavations, a watchtower was discovered here along with weapons and ceramics. This may have been part of a Roman security system and was built in the early 1st century during the reign of Emperor Augustus. The view then opens up: surrounded by lush green meadows and impressive mountains, the train runs upstream along the Linth Canal towards Weesen. In the summer, you are likely to see people on the water here, as the section is often used by rubber boats or canoes. These set off from Weesen, which is also known as the Riviera on Lake Walen and is located directly on its shore.

Weesen has a particularly mild climate due to its sheltered location. Palms, fig and lemon trees and even kiwis thrive here. Thanks to the many hours of sunshine, you can even grow your own grapes in Weesen. Benches along the lake promenade invite you to stay for a while and enjoy the surroundings. The area is a popular destination for tourists and nature lovers who want to experience the beauty of the Alps and Lake Walen. In Weesen, the route leads from the harbour to the “Weesen See” bus stop, and this is where it ends. If you still have some time left: the Weesen Museum and Gallery are nearby, and you can find out more about the history of the region here.

An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
