Intro
This amazing bike loop in the Augstbord region with two distinctive uphill sections requires stamina. Flowing single trail downhills with panoramic views are the reward for the hard work. The trails lead across mountains, through forests and sunny villages with a view of the 4000 m peaks of the Valais.
Description
The postbus takes the bikers to the start of the tour in Zenhäusern, the highest part of Bürchen village. Passing typical Valais barns to Unterbäch is a very enjoyable part of the trail. By the way, Unterbäch is where Swiss women cast their first votes in 1957. The tour climbs slightly to Eischoll and continues through the old village centre to the Striggen chairlift station. Always climbing gently uphill to Undri Eischollalp, the trail offers fantastic views of Undri and Obri Senggalp. A short downhill on the forest road and an ascent are followed by a lovely trail to Gibidum, always in view of the regal Bietschhorn and the peaks of the Bernese Alps on the way to the highest point of the tour.
With fresh water from the fountain, the downhill ride known as Magic Trail begins: a steep single trail snaking down to Brandalp. The second section follows an old path through the forest. From Brandalp the tour leads down to sunny Bürchen on a gravel road. Those with enough strength now begin to climb 500 altitude meters to Moosalp. For the others there is always the postbus. Directly near Moosalp, in view of the Saas and Matter Valleys with countless 4000 m peaks, the fun starts again: a flowing, easy and open single trail first leads around the Stand viewpoint. Twelve 4000 m peaks are visible from the highest point on the Moosalp plateau. A turn follows shortly after Breitmattem. The middle section of the long drawn out trail through the forest to Törbel is a bit more difficult.
A visit to the Urchigs Terbil open-air museum in Törbel is well worth it. Various typical buildings, a barn, a mill and a bakehouse demonstrate how the early life in a Valais mountain village used to be. Back in the saddle and after a few curves in the road an attractive trail with two sharp uphill sections continues to Zeneggen. Via the Mittlere Hellela nature preserve, the tour returns to sunny Bürchen, high above the Rhone Valley.
