Muttner-Höhi-Weg
Overview
Intro
The winter hike from the native Walser hamlet of Obermutten to Muttner Höhi is two things: peaceful and full of magnificent views. The Muttnerhorn, Piz Beverin, Albula valley and Muttner Höhi, if you make it that far, all give you a stunning view of the Burgenland Domleschg and Heinzenberg.
Description
Obermutten lies in a dip in the path high above Domleschg. As is typical of the region, the houses here are scorched black by the sun. In 1946, the village went up in flames following a storm. Donations funded the restoration of the buildings and so the village’s native character was retained. The village with its raw charm is the highest of Mutten’s three-story settlements. In 1946, the German language and Walser researcher, Rudolf Hotzenköcherle, described it as «the most secluded spot in the German Confederation». It’s hard to believe but until 1966, there was no electricity or running water in the buildings in Obermutten.
You can experience this seclusion and authenticity on the hike to Muttner Höhi. It starts in the village square. The uphill route wends past the regional museum, which can be used for weddings, and on to the only church in Switzerland built entirely out of wood. You then walk north through snow-covered meadows to Muttner Höhi. At the top of this seemingly innocuous mountain, you are suddenly struck by the phenomenal view in all directions. Close by is the Muttnerhorn, Mutten’s local mountain, followed by Piz Beverin and Bergüner Stöcke. The view rolls over the Domleschg, Schams, Albula valley and Heinzenberg.
You can go back the same way to Obermutten to warm up in the Berggasthaus Post, a mountain inn, or you can take a journey through the history of Obermutten. In the «Hiischer-Plan», those interested can find exciting facts about the local houses.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
