Parcours du Savolaire
Overview
Intro
The snowshoe trek leads up to the hill of Savolaire. At an altitude of 1,650 metres, you will have a fantastic view over the snow-covered Val de Morgins, the Rhone plain, the Vaud Alps and the majestic Dents du Midi mountain range.
Description
The circular tour starts in the Lower Valais mountain village of Morgins at an altitude of 1,300 metres. The winter sports resort, located directly on the border with France, is the gateway to the cross-border ski area of Portes du Soleil, the largest international ski area in the world. But it's not just skiers who get their money's worth in the eponymous Val de Morgins: on snowshoes, you can enjoy the unique alpine scenery away from the hustle and bustle of the ski slopes on the Parcours du Savolaire.
The route starts at the valley station of the Foilleuse chairlift and climbs along the forest's edge. Slowly leaving the valley station behind, with each metre you climb, a better view opens up over the many wooden chalets that line the valley with their snow-covered roofs. Shortly afterwards, the snowshoe trail enters the forest and winds its way steeply up to the Buvette de Savolaire, which is unfortunately not open in winter. You reach the hike's highest point here and, during a picnic break, enjoy views over the Rhone plain, the Vaud Alps and the towering Dents du Midi chain. The three-kilometre-long mountain massif comprises seven peaks of almost equal height, which soar above the glacier landscape as mighty, more than 3,000-metre-high rock spires.
From Savolaire, the route continues leisurely downhill across snow-covered alpine meadows towards Champarin. The last section leads through the forest, where you can let the peace and quiet work its magic once more before reaching the starting point in Morgins.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
