Intro

A snowshoe tour through the larch forests above Campo Vallemaggia. Begin with a steep climb to Corte Nuovo: in the background is Pizzo Bombögn mountain, famed for its stone wall. Then return across a magnificent larch-clad slope with watercourses and views of Cimalmotto village.

Description

The mountain village of Campo Vallemaggia (1,291 m.a.s.l.) lies in the Rovana Valley, a tributary valley of the Maggia Valley. The trail starts in the village centre, with its aristocratic houses and numerous churches. Then, above the main village church, comes a flat stretch that crosses a brook and plunges into a forest. The climb takes you past majestic larch trees. A couple of flat sections invite you to take a break and admire the superb view of the village, framed by the treetops.

Unfavourable geological conditions as well as deforestation caused many landslides here from the start of the 19th century onwards. Even today, they characterise the area traversed by this trail. Evidence of this can be seen, for example, in the biotope by the side of the route, which is fed from a watercourse that is enclosed by timber walls. The channel is used to drain off surface water. A total of 28 of these channels were built in the last century to arrest landslide movements.

The next destination is Corte Nuovo, the highest point of this tour. This clearing with its rustic buildings reminds us that use of the sunlit side of the Rovana Valley as Alpine pastureland is an important factor here. The backdrop: the Bombögn peak, with its impressive drystone wall. 300 meters long and two meters high, this wall gains 150 meters in altitude as it climbs up to the summit. It was built in 1948 to protect the pastures of Campo Vallemaggia. The next section of the hike crosses gentle terrain, with magnificent views of the village of Cimalmotto. Then you return through superb scenery, amid a larch grove that is traversed by several watercourses.

An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
