Raten Trail
Overview
Intro
Discover the wildly romantic side of winter high above the Ägerital valley on the highest snowshoe trail in the canton of Zug, traverse snow-capped forests, and gaze out on the Säntis from the Central Swiss Alps.
Description
The starting point of the Raten-Gottschalkenberg snowshoe trail is opposite the Raten restaurant at 1077 metres above sea level. The trail leads through open meadows and fields, gently rolling terrain, and, for a change, through romantic wooded areas with coniferous and mixed forest. The first stretch is relatively flat and easy to walk on and offers a fantastic view of the near and distant mountain landscape. You can admire the Rigi and behind it the Pilatus, which loom majestically over the landscape. To the south, you can see the Urner Alps from afar, covered in a deep blanket of snow, while to the east tower the Säntis and the Speer.
The second stretch is somewhat more demanding, since it contains more uphill slopes and changes of direction. In the second stretch, you roam through the snow-covered pine and mixed forests. The beauty of the natural surroundings will distract you somewhat from the exertion, and during a short breather you can enjoy the silence of the pristine snowy landscape and breathe in the fresh, pure mountain air. Having reached the highest point, you'll find yourself in front of the Gottschalkenberg restaurant, where you can have a rest. From there, we recommend a detour to the Bellevue, where you can enjoy a magnificent view of Lake Zurich and the moraine landscape of Menzingen.
Then it's time to head in the opposite direction back to the starting point at Raten, first through the coniferous and mixed forests and later in the second stretch across open snowfields, while once again enjoying the magnificent views of the Uri and Glarus Alps, which have a particularly beautiful glow in the evening light.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
