Intro

Idyllic landscapes and impressive glass art: The stained glass trail through the hilly green Glane district offers hikers and art enthusiasts a chance to admire the well-preserved stained glass windows of the pretty chapels and churches. The starting point of the circular hike is the attractive medieval town of Romont.

Description

The technically easy hike starts at the Vitromusée in Romont, the Swiss Museum of Stained Glass and Glass Art. The museum is located in Romont castle, from where a steps lead down to the river Glâne. The district takes its name from the river. After about half an hour, you pass the small chapel of Sainte-Anne before continuing slightly uphill for another 30 minutes towards Mézières. In the parish church of this small village, you can admire the abstract stained glass by Yoki on the 34 windows and visit the Swiss Wallpaper Museum in the castle of Mézières. The trail then descends along fields and through a short section of forest to La Neirigue. The hamlet is located by the stream of the same name and is home to the Chapelle de La Neirigue. The chapel, built in 1641, is also worth a visit with its pretty stained glass windows. Continue to Grangettes-Près-Romont, where the St. Moritz Church can be visited. The slightly elevated place of the church offers a wonderful wide view over the idyllic landscape of the Glane district. From here, the hike takes you back to La Neirigue along the same path (about an hour in total). Tip: If you want to shorten the hike, leave St. Moritz church and start on the way back already in La Neirigue.

On the way back, the hike first leads slightly uphill for about 20 minutes to Berlens, where the chapel Notre-Dame de l’Epine has been attracting pilgrims since the Middle Ages. The small church delights with its colourful windows that depict, among other things, the times of the church year. Before admiring the next stained-glass windows, it is worth making a short stop in front of the hamlet of Mottex. From here the view of Romont and the hilly surroundings is particularly beautiful. Taking the path through the fields we continue for another 30 minutes in the direction of Romont, until we come upon the most famous place of worship on the hike: The monastery La Fille-Dieu. The active nunnery of the Cistercian order stands on the outskirts of the town and was founded in 1268 by three young women. The modernity of the stained glass windows of the monastery church is in exciting contrast to the historic walls. The final ascent brings hikers back to Romont, where benches in front of the 18th century collegiate church invite you to take a well-deserved break. Fascinating fact: The choir stalls served as inspiration for the film “The Lord of the Rings”.

Tip: On a guided hike, those with a thirst for knowledge will learn even more about the history of the colourful stained glass church windows and their artists. More information
