Intro
Switzerland's largest upland moor can be found in the high valley of Rothenthurm, a Nordic-looking landscape crossed by the varied Finnenloipe track. This long route amid a protected landscape offers a unique opportunity to enjoy the pleasures of nature.
Description
Not far from the red-roofed Letzi tower and just a stone’s throw from the station is where the tour begins.
The circular track, groomed for both the classic and skating techniques, presents little challenge at first as it runs out into the wide moorland. Skiers will soon notice the large number of peat huts amid the landscape, once used to store the peat extracted from the moor and dried for heating purposes. A short time later, they will come across another characteristic element of the high valley: the Biber, one of the last freely meandering rivers in the Alpine foothills. As the route continues, they will cross its path many more times.
In general, the longer the route of this track, the more demanding the route profile. This is no problem for less seasoned skiers, however, as there are several opportunities to shorten the route at well signposted locations.
Whatever length they choose, once back in the village they should visit the parish church of St. Anthony, one of the most striking places of worship in the canton of Schwyz. The distinctive roof on its north side is inscribed with an appeal to the church’s patron: «Saint Anthony, pray for us».
