Schanfigger Höhenweg
Overview
Intro
The last section of the Schanfigger Höhenweg is full of contrasts: sun-drenched mountain meadows, pretty Alpine huts, steep ravines and wild mountain streams. The tour offers lovely views and leads along the hills of the Schanfigg valley basin down to Maladers.
Description
This part of the tour is the most rugged of the Schanfigger Höhenweg. From the lovely Alpine meadows the trail keeps dropping into the steep ravines where you can hear the waterfalls thundering below. A gentle up and down path takes you along the hillside, where the trail hugs the sunny slopes. In Bargun and Lafet you pass traditional Alpine huts and enjoy the peace and quiet of the mountain valley. The views of the Schanfigg with its deep-green meadows surrounded by majestic peaks are breathtaking.
On the last passage of the trail you cross the Dreigi and Montalin ravines and look down into the deeply cut gorges. The exposed passages you will come across here and there are secured with chains and ropes. To the sound of the roaring mountain streams you leave the rugged side of the valley behind and reach the meadows and scattered Alpine huts above Maladers.
Now you will begin the approximately two-and-a-half-hour descent through the Castieler Tobel ravine. The last stretch alone drops a thousand metres in altitude before you reach your destination for this leg. Sunny Maladers was its own municipality until 2019, before merging with Chur on 1 January 2020. From here you take the post bus for a leisurely ride back to Chur. However, for those who still have the energy, there is nothing to stop you from walking the four kilometres back to the capital of the Canton Graubünden.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
