Sentier des Gorges de l'Areuse
Overview
Intro
Sometimes wide, sometimes narrow, sometimes gurgling and thundering, sometimes gently babbling: the Areuse river. This charming route follows the constantly surprising river. Old stone bridges, footbridges and steps, crevices and impressive rock faces characterise the walk in the heart of narrow, refreshing gorges.
Description
The source of the Areuse river is above St-Sulpice, in a karst lake at 800 metres elevation. From here, it winds through a varied landscape: first lazily through the Val-de-Travers valley, then spectacularly through the Areuse Gorge and finally into Lake Neuchâtel. The river is not only scenic; it also plays an important role in the regional water supply and power generation. Hydraulic energy has been used here since the 14th century.
There are a few surprises in store for everyone following the course of the river on foot: for example, the Saut de Brot and its famous stone bridge. This location, which is reached via footbridges and steps, was impassable until a hiking trail was constructed in 1876.
After walking for around an hour, you reach Champ-du-Moulin. The La Truite hotel and restaurant is known for its trout dishes. You can also stay here overnight, if you like. After a leisurely break, things get wild: The stretch to Boudry is probably the most impressive. The swirling river plunges through beautiful gorges, surrounded by remarkable rock faces.
Then, after the Pont des Clées bridge, calm suddenly reigns and you see the first houses in Boudry, your destination for this stage. A castle towers over the picturesque village and is home to the winemaking museum – the perfect end to this spectacular hike.
