Sentier des Sens La Tzoumaz
Overview
Intro
Smell the flowers, listen to the birds, feel the soil and the water on your skin - the Sentier des Sens invites visitors to discover nature with all their senses. The nature trail follows the bisse from La Tzoumaz and takes visitors back to the roots of the forest in a playful way.
Description
La Tzoumaz is located 15 minutes from Riddes and overlooks the entire Rhone Valley. The trail starts at the Maison de la Forêt bus stop. After just a few metres, you reach the buvette of the same name. In addition to snacks such as the traditional Valaisan plate, there is also an exhibition in an old Valaisan mountain pasture. Here you can discover, touch and listen to the cries of the animals of the forest, as well as other temporary exhibitions.
Accompanied by a beautiful mountain panorama, the path leads over a few hairpin bends to a small stream, or more precisely: to the bisse de Saxon. The historic bisse was built by hand between 1865 and 1876 to irrigate the fields and gardens in the villages. At 26 km, it is the longest water conduit in the Valais. Idyllic in the forest, the path follows it to a barbecue site with a beautiful picnic area that invites you to linger. Over small wooden bridges, the path dips further into the valley to the banks of the Fare. At the mountain stream, you can immerse yourself in nature with your bare hands or feet. At the end of the trail, surrounded by cattle pastures, there is another picnic spot in the midst of magnificent nature. We return along the same path.
The former name of La Tzoumaz, Mayens-de-Riddes (mountain pasture belonging to Riddes), indicates the original use of the alpine settlement. Thus, along the way, muscular Herens cows can still be seen from time to time, competing in the traditional Valais wrestling cow fights.
