Sihlsee-Winterwanderweg
Overview
Intro
Combining the contemplation and baroque splendour of Einsiedeln Abbey with the wintry hush and scenic beauty of Lake Sihl, this panoramic hike also offers views of the Etzel and the Ybrig mountains.
Description
The Lake Sihl winter hiking trail begins by Einsiedeln Abbey, on the snowy meadow above the Brüel underground car park. The traditional Benedictine Abbey is home to around 50 monks, but the bustle of monastic life soon gives way to a gentle landscape and peaceful contemplation. Hikers follow the groomed winter trail over snowy meadows down to Lake Sihl and alongside the water towards the Roblosen lido. At the opposite end of Switzerland's largest reservoir, the Ybrig mountains stretch up into the sky.
On the way back, cross-country skiers can be seen gliding smoothly along the Schwedentritt trail. The route passes the Galgenchappeli, which once stood alongside a place of execution. The condemned would receive their last blessing in the former chapel, now a weather shelter for pilgrims. Einsiedeln Abbey, visited by many of them as Switzerland's foremost place of pilgrimage, marks the end of the circular route.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
