Parisian flair in Thurgau. Tracing the Napoleonic family's footsteps, you discover picturesque gardens and magnificent castles. The route leads through a mosaic of fields and orchards with spectacular views over the Untersee. Enjoy the panoramic views of the Alps, Vorarlberg and the Allgäu from the Napoleon Tower.
Description
The route begins in Siegershausen and shortly afterwards you arrive at the Bommer Weiher pond. The protected area is an important habitat for water birds and amphibians. Passing through the Nüwiler and Tägerwiler forests, you soon come across the Napoleon Tower at Hohenrain near Wäldi. The viewing platform offers breathtaking panoramic views. To the east, the view stretches to Vorarlberg and the Allgäu, while the stunning Swiss alpine panorama beckons to the south. Below you, a colourful patchwork of forests, fields and orchards extends. By the way, anyone who wanted to visit the lookout tower as a private person at the time had to pay the sum of six kreuzers, equivalent to about CHF 100 in today's purchasing power.
Charles Parquin was responsible for the construction of the Napoleon Tower in cooperation with Louis Napoleon. He also owned Salenstein Castle, which you encounter after the next section, past Helsighausen and along forest trails. It is now not far to the destination for this hike at Mannenbach-Salenstein railway station. However, one highlight still awaits: Arenenberg Castle, the location of one of the most attractive viewing points in the entire Lake Constance region. It is a must to visit: The castle sits in a park and garden with an over 600-year-old tradition. In Medieval times, Thurgau and Constance patricians created a pleasure garden here. In the 19th century, the site was converted into a large landscape park under Queen Hortense, the mother of Louis Napoleon.
The imperial family settled in Arenenberg Castle after Emperor Napoleon I was deposed and exiled. Louis Napoleon, later Napoleon III and the last Emperor of France, lived here as a youth and young adult. The family brought Parisian flair to Thurgau, and in the Arenenberg Napoleon Museum, visitors stroll through the magnificent salons and original rooms.
