Intro
The winter hiking path over Alp Sellamatt leads through the fabulous natural landscape in the bosom of Churfirsten. The view reaches far down into Thur Valley and the sea of fog, which is in winter often spreading over the lowland. Boards at the wayside tell legends from Toggenburg.
Description
Toggenburg Story Trail leads mostly along the cross-country skiing trail around Alp Sellamatt. The high plateau is in front of Churfirsten on half way between valley and summit. The rough karst landscape is pervaded by numerous caves, in which the legendary Wildmannli had been hiding. Under the winterly snow cover the Alpine meadow lined by spruce trees presents from its soft side. Quietness and untouched nature characterise the landscape. Along the way there are 12 wonderfully illustrated legend boards located at Alpine huts, stables or trees. Take a short break and inform yourself about the legendary Toggenburg mythical creatures.
The route consists of two loops and can be shortened by half on demand. At Thurtalerstofel the highest point of the circular trail is reached, before it leads back. From there a great view to Alpstein, Churfirsten and Toggenburg can be enjoyed. The view reaches far down into the flatland, which is in the winter often covered by a sea of fog, while the sun is shining at Alp Sellamatt.
With the gondola lift from Alt St. Johann the starting and destination point at Alp Sellamatt can be reached. You can stop and replenish your strength in the mountain restaurant Sellamatt or in the cosy Zinggenpub.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
