Intro

Much of the route to Aigle is lined with vineyards. On the way, it's well worth making a detour to the well-known salt mines in Bex, an extensive cave system. The section ends at Aigle, the starting point of the tour.

Description

The municipality of Gryon is surrounded by the imposing Alpine peak of Muveran and the Miroir d’Argentine rock face. The Miroir d’Argentine is the result of a three-stage process of creation. Starting with the formation of rocks on the sea floor, followed by folding processes and finally erosion. This mirror-smooth rock face originated as a fossil coral reef from the primeval Tethys Sea 200 million years ago. Miroir means mirror and argent means silver.

The final stage of the tour of the Vaud Alps begins at Gryon train station. The community, in which the residents are called Tâtchis, has a historic town centre that is a listed site. First, a steep path leads down the slope to the l’Avançon stream. The route continues along a surface road that follows the stream to the Bex salt mines in Bévieux. By this point you have already covered an elevation gain of more than 600 metres.

The path now runs through the vineyards up to the village of Fenalet-sur-Bex. Shortly afterwards you reach the salt mine. This mine forms a huge labyrinth of shafts, tunnels, steps and chambers and extends across a length of 50 kilometres. Since a shepherd discovered the salt spring in the 15th century, the “white gold” has been mined here. This was already a valuable resource in ancient times. Today, annual production is around 35,000 tons. It is possible to attend a tour of the mine.

You then reach the village of Antagnes. From here the route runs parallel to the ViaFrancigena, a long-distance hiking trail from Canterbury to Rome, or within Switzerland from St. Croix to the Great Saint Bernard Pass. You cross the village of Ollon and finally reach the attractive castle of Aigle, which is surrounded by vines. The Bernese conquered the castle in 1475, and over time it was used as a hospital, prison and court. It has served as a wine museum since 1971 and tells the history of viticulture in Chablais, the Lake Geneva region, Switzerland and neighbouring countries. In doing so, it preserves the region’s rich wine culture.

Not far from the castle is Aigle train station, where this stage, and with it, the circular tour through the Vaud Alpine region comes to an end.

An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
