Trans-Altarezia Bike
Overview
Intro
The Trans-Altarezia route ends with Italian ambiance and a pizza, as it should be. But first, the route from Poschiavo to Tirano offers a lot of biking fun.
Description
The ascent from Poschiavo to Sclupetoir totals about 1000 meters in height, but then you reach the long high-level trail which takes you to San Romerio. The magnificent church far out on the rocky spur is easily visible from the valley floor, but for us, the immediately adjacent restaurant is probably more appealing just now. Everything is homemade here, even the Grappa brandy. A stop is well worth it. Make sure you leave enough time to enjoy the views from this exposed spot. Far below is the valley of Poschiavo with the Bernina range and striking Piz Palü behind it.
Small roads then take us through the very steep terrain until they turn into a single trail near the border with Italy. This is the final stretch of the Trans-Altarezia route. The trail winds itself through the dense forest, before we get to the village of Baruffini, and the downhill ride takes us through the vines directly to the piazza of Tirano. And what do the likes of us do after five days on our mountain bike? We order a large pizza and drink to a successful tour through the Altarezia.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
