Via Mundaun 2

The day begins at a leisurely pace: From Meierhof, the second stage of the Via Mundaun goes through peaceful villages via Affeier to Misanenga. Many chapels, old stables and typical Walser houses invite you to stop and marvel along the way.

After around an hour, you say goodbye to civilisation; snow and nature take on the leading role again. The trail gradually climbs and you get closer and closer to Cuolm Sura. While the itinerary takes you through the ski resort, you stay far away from the hustle and bustle.

Those who wish can take a break at the Bündner Rigi cafe/atelier before continuing to the Sogn Carli chapel. It’s said to have been built in the 17th century and is located in a clearing on the eastern slope of Piz Mundaun. You can look inside through a small window. The surrounding view is also magnificent: It stretches far over Surselva and to Chur, framed by the imposing mountain scenery of Lumnezia.

You begin your descent into the valley. You pass through Morissen to Vella, where the landscape shows its sunny side: The slopes of Lumnezia are known for their mild climate. This side valley of the Surselva is not called the “valley of light” for nothing. Even in the winter, when there is still snow on the ground elsewhere, the first patches of green are starting to show here. But this doesn’t spoil the mood, as in Vella, the destination for this stage, you can enjoy the last rays of sunshine after a long day’s hiking even more. Whether that’s on a terrace over a drink or walking around the village. It’s an impressive location, with historic architecture including the imposing plague chapel from 1587 and the Catholic church with its valuable paintings.
