Whether it’s a leisurely stroll or fast-paced cross-country skiing – on Mount Weissenstein above Solothurn, everyone can escape the fog of the Swiss Plateau and enjoy marvellous views.
Description
It doesn’t always have to be the Alps: the Jura also offers exceptional cross-country skiing – on Solothurn’s local mountain, for example. The broad shape of Mount Weissenstein and its chalk cliffs looms against the backdrop of this Baroque town. The popular outing destination is situated at 1,280 meters above sea level and can be reached by gondola lift in just 10 minutes from Oberdorf. Once at the summit, winter sports enthusiasts are greeted by a breath-taking panoramic alpine view extending from Mount Säntis to Mont Blanc.
The beautifully designed and simple trail starts at the Restaurant Sennhaus. Without any notable descents or climbs, it leads via Chänzeli to the Hinterweissenstein mountain restaurant in a large loop some six kilometres in length. Very close to the restaurant, which represents the route’s turning point, is the Nidlenloch. This impressive network of caves stretches several kilometres into the mountain.
The trail now leads not through dark narrow passages, but across open fields along the edge of the forest and back along the same path for about one kilometre. Instead of performing another loop, the trail now returns directly to the starting point – and a well-earned rest in one of the two restaurants at the Weissenstein mountain station.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
