Winterwanderweg Gais
Overview
Intro
Outsmarting the fog: This easy hike takes you from the village of Gais, awarded with the Wakker Prize, to the Stoss Pass and back again, along sunny slopes that offer a magnificent view of the Rhine Valley.
Description
From the train station in Gais, the trail soon arrives at the first outlook point – the Hohegg. The lovingly designed seating area and the view over the plains all the way to Mount Säntis invite you to linger. Continuing on, you cross snow-covered meadows, arriving at Hackbühl. You have now reached the heart of the Gais cross-country skiing area. Just a short stretch through the woods and Rietli station appears. If you would like to shorten your hike, you can take the train back to Gais from here.
But the Stoss Pass restaurant is not far away. From there, you can already see the Stoss monument, which commemorates the Battle of Stoss Pass in 1405. The courageous Appenzellers emerged victorious, thanks to the help of their wives, who scared off the enemy with their pitchforks. The return trip takes you on a narrow path along the Sommersberg hills. The gloriously sunny slope is particularly popular on warm winter days, when many people from the nearby Rhine Valley come up here to escape the fog. In the rolling hills all around Gais they enjoy views of the distinctive Alpstein peaks along with the warming rays of the sun.
The hike ends in the village of Gais, renowned for its healthful climate and also between 1749 and 1860 for its special whey cures. The quaint town square is not to be missed. Gais was awarded the prestigious Wakker Prize in 1977 for its successful efforts to preserve the village’s heritage.
