Salina Helvetica - die Salzkammer
Overview
Intro
Salt is one of our earliest cultural assets, and has shaped the history of mankind.
Salt is one of our earliest cultural assets, and has shaped the history of mankind. At the “Salzkammer” museum you will learn about the many areas in which salt has played an important role in human cultural development.
The “Salzkammer” museum houses 15 rooms on two floors, all dedicated to the wondrous world of salt. Blocks of salt dating back several thousand years, historic salt jars and a collection of sayings and anecdotes all recall the origins of this “white gold”. The exhibition takes you from the early days of salt extraction and trade through to the era of modern industrial processing. There is even an original borehole which has been opened up to allow visitors to peer down it – always an exciting moment! The exhibition is housed in the Villa Glenck. Built in the Neo-Baroque style in 1860, the villa stands on the first salt extraction site in northwest Switzerland. It served for many years as the residence of the saltworks’ directors.
