Europe's highest open-air cog railway transports visitors from the Zermatt train station directly to the summit of Gornergrat year-round. Since 1891 the steam train has been taking mountain enthusiasts from around the world up to Brienzer Rothorn – mostly in the original locomotives from when the railroad was first built. The steam cog railway has been the only one of its kind left since 1931, and riding a steam train is especially lovely in autumn thanks to the clear vistas. Every Wednesday at 10 a.m. the steam from the train is actually used to cook sausages. After they're done, the train stops so everyone can enjoy them.

The Voralpen-Express is the most attractive way to travel between Central and Eastern Switzerland. After a last glimpse of Lucerne and Lake Lucerne, the train heads toward Rapperswil, crossing the splendid Rothenthurm upland moors along the way.
