Sunset snowshoe tour high above Montreux
Overview
Intro
Think the shores of Lake Geneva wouldn’t work for winter adventures? You couldn’t be more wrong. For example, how about a showshoe tour at the foot of the Rochers-de-Naye?
When you hear the name Montreux, you think of the sophistication of the Riviera, strolling along the shores of Lake Geneva and jazz. But in winter? A short trip on the cog railway will take visitors to the alpine winter wonderland of the local mountain, Rochers-de-Naye. The view from up top is unparalleled, particularly in winter. To see it at sunset is the icing on the cake. So, pack up your snowshoes and sticks, get on the train in Montreux in the late afternoon and travel up the mountain in comfort.
Soon enough, it’ll be time to disembark, strap on your snow shoes and get going. The snowshoe tour passes through a number of snow-covered forests. The guides from the Montreux Riviera winter sports school are familiar with the romantic trails and will take their guests to the best viewpoints. Suddenly, the forest clears, the Rochers-de-Naye towers in front of us, and as we turn around we are left almost breathless: what a view! The sun is already low and turns the snow-covered mountain ranges first orange, then red. Lake Geneva lies far below us, like a vast ocean. The sunset is the highlight of this natural firework display.
It then gets dark quite quickly. The guide has brought a torch for every member of the group. The return journey by the light of their flames is incredibly romantic. We find ourselves back at our departure point all too quickly. But we’re not done yet: although the wealth of new impressions meant that we hadn’t noticed how hungry we had become, the local treats from the guide’s rucksack are very welcome. Of course, there is also a drop of local wine to toast the experience. Cheers!
