Thun – city of water
Overview
Intro
Summer in the city? Absolutely. In the vibrant city of Thun, water is never more than a stone’s throw away. Take a dip in the refreshing water at the time-honoured Schwäbis river pool, watch the Aare surfers for that Hawaii feeling and enjoy the fresh air on the deck of the Blümlisalp to get the full Thun experience.
To know Thun is to love it! Historic raised promenades, countless shopping opportunities, the fairytale Thun Castle and an enchanting mountain landscape are some of the well-known highlights. Locally run concept stores and the relaxed atmosphere also make the town on Lake Thun a trendy yet relatively hidden gem. Another highlight? Thun is literally surrounded by water. Whether lake, river or fountain – water gives the small city in the Bernese Oberland a splash of freshness and ease; Thun truly is a water city where guests can enjoy summer and all it has to offer.
Thun’s Old Town full of fountains
First stop: the Old Town. In the cool shade of the houses, strolling along the winding alleys is a pleasant experience even in summer. Thun is a treasure trove of shops offering fair, local and durable products, which is why it certainly lives up to its reputation as the shopping capital of the Bernese Oberland. Our shopping tips The Obere and Untere Hauptgasse, the shopping island Bälliz and the markets. Visitors can quench their thirst while saving resources: several fountains in the Old Town provide fresh drinking water. Tip: those who feel a thirst for knowledge at the sight of the beautifully decorated fountains and want to learn more about Thun can join a guided tour of the Old Town.
River swimming in the heart of Thun
Next, it’s time to cool off. Guests can take a dip in the cool water at the historic Schwäbis river pool. The open-air swimming facility on the River Aare has been welcoming water lovers from near and far since 1884. Now, all that remains is to drift, cool off and relax in the sunshine. Meet the Aare surfers
On the way to the boat station, visitors will come across another of Thun’s surprises: the River Aare surfers. When conditions are good, the pros surf the waves of the Aare at the upper or lower lock, admired by a crowd of onlookers. Warning: river surfing is only for very experienced surfers.
Steaming across Lake Thun
What better way to round off a summer’s day all about water than on a paddle steamer gliding across the crystal-clear Lake Thun? On the deck of the nostalgic Blümlisalp, passengers enjoy the fresh breeze and a fantastic view of the snow-covered 4,000m peaks of the Bernese Alps. In summer, the Belle Epoque paddle steamer usually runs twice a day from Thun (subject to change). The pier is located directly opposite Thun railway station. To the timetable
Getting there: Thun is very well connected by public transport (from Bern: 20 min, from Zurich: 1h 30min). To the timetable
