Where water really falls - Lauterbrunnen Valley
Overview
Intro
The Upper Lauterbrunnen Valley is full of waterfalls, lovely scenery and cultural assets. Special theme paths have been created to give the walkers a better understanding of these treasures.
Two paths lead to the Upper Lauterbrunnen Valley - the high level trail from Mürren and the old trading route from Stechelberg.
As a UNESCO trail, the latter highlights the fascination of this secluded high valley. It passes magnificent waterfalls and leads into an area of solitude where nature still has all the space in the world, naming glaciers, streams and mountain lakes, pointing out arnica, saxifrage and Turk's cap, and showing where ibex, black grouse and eagles can be seen. Trail signs and guideposts with specially created pictogrammes help to guide the visitors to the places of interest in the nature conservation area and the UNESCO World Heritage site. The starting point is the information panel on the gate of the UNESCO World Heritage site in Stechelberg. And all the while to the sounds of thundering torrents and babbling brooks. Boasting 72 waterfalls, the spray is enough to rouse even the most tired of hikers!
Romantically wild, the Upper Lauterbrunnen Valley is far from civilisation. The Hotel Obersteinberg is lit by candles, and everything is cooked on wood fires. An alpine dairy provides specialities just as it would have done 200 years ago.
