Intro

In the 2000s, Didier Moret was one of the best on the Swiss ski touring scene. In 2008, at the height of his career, he won the prestigious Patrouille des Glaciers – the world’s most challenging race for ski mountaineers from Zermatt to Verbier.

Duel against friend and time.

Today, the 42-year old is meeting with his training partner, Cédric Remy, who is 13 years his junior. The two passionate sport lovers took part in some gripping duels during the last few races.

The conditions for Didier and Cédric could not be more perfect at 9 a.m.

They skilfully secure the skins to their touring skis and activate the time recording app on their smartphones. Who knows – today might be the day they beat the current track record of 61 minutes for the 3.1 kilometre route. The start of the signposted Vitaski trails stretches over an open expanse of land – with a breathtaking panorama.

Ski touring as a source of strength.

Didier enjoys the fast ascent with every bone in his body.

While others struggle with their training programme, he bursts with energy the higher he climbs. During these moments, he draws his strength for working in his sports shop and for his family, who are more important to him than anything else. Didier's three children were all born within just two years of each other – a rate comparable with that at which he climbs mountains.

The trail now leads through the idyllic pine forest, alternating between steep and flat terrain.

The duel between Didier and Cédric also alternates – sometimes the old hand is the one who takes the lead, at other times it's his younger training partner.

Phew, for once he was still able to beat his younger friend.

The destination – Bärghus am Musersbergli – is getting closer in sight, and Didier and Cédric complete the final spurt out of puff. They both arrive at their destination at the same time, although Didier wins by a whisker. They haven't achieved a new record for the route, but the views over the valley and the imminent downward slope are enough of a reward.
