Gruyères Castle at a glance

The Château de Gruyères has been perched on a hill above the Sarine in the canton Fribourg since the 13th century. As a museum, it takes you through 8 centuries of architecture, art and history of the region. The castle has medieval stained glass, frescoes from the Ancien Régime, paintings by Corot and the Knights' Hall decorated in the Troubadour style.

What to experience

Tour of the castle (1-2 hours)

Walk from the guard room to the romantic salons to the knights' hall, where medieval armor is on display. Along the way, you will meet the characters of the Gruyère legends: The beautiful Luzia, the fool Chalamala and the lame Hans. You can download the free audio guide with augmented reality to your smartphone before your visit.

Castle garden and fortification walls

From the French Garden and the fortification walls, you have a wide view over the rooftops of the medieval town of Gruyères to the Fribourg Pre-Alps. Here you will enjoy the history of the castle hill, on which the castle has stood since the 13th century. The garden is open from Easter to September.

  • Good to know: Picnicking within the castle walls is not allowed.

Treasure hunt for children (1.5 hours)

Follow a medieval-dressed cultural mediator through the permanent exhibition with your children and search for 10 hidden documents. Each certificate shows a picture that brings you closer to the treasure chamber. On the way you will hear the stories and legends of the castle. At the end, a knight is crowned and part of the loot is taken home.

  • Good to know: The treasure hunt must be booked in advance.
