Natural idyll and disused bunkers in peaceful symbiosis in Scharenwald forest, impressive timber-framed buildings in Stammheim wine country, then on over the green Seerücken, an unspectacular, quiet ride through rolling meadows and woodland, past isolated farms.
Description
In the north of Switzerland, near the famous Rhine Falls, lies the old trading and craft town of Schaffhausen. The well-preserved old town is known for its beautiful oriels. There are said to be more than 170 of them, and you can see water-spitting dragons and strange-looking fish in some of them. High above these works of art, the Munot, a fortification that is the symbol of the city, stands stoically.
This stage initially leads along the Rhine into the Scharenwald forest and on to the Rhine Fort, a historical military monument of national importance. On 22 May 1799, the Austrian Archduke Charles had two temporary bridges built over the Rhine, which were crossed by around 25,000 men two nights later. You leave the Rhine behind again in the medieval bridge town of Diessenhofen.
This stage leads through a rural area along the Geisslibach stream to Unterstammheim and Oberstammheim. There are timber-framed houses par excellence to be seen here. Gasthof Hirschen built in 1684 is one of the most impressive half-timbered houses in Eastern Switzerland. Between the wine villages of Nussbaumen and Hüttwilen, set in a protected meadow landscape, lies the small Hüttwilersee lake. Its idyllic beach is surrounded by reeds, bushes and trees. The next town on the route is Herdern. The castle there was once part of the St. Urban monastery, and since 1995 it has been a home for people with psychological and social problems. Regenerative agriculture is being tried out in the adjoining farm estate.
The recurring forest sections also create a regenerative and relaxing feeling. The Gündelhart settlement is characterised by the Catholic Church of St. Mauritius with its funny onion-shaped tower. And of course, the castle also plays its part in ensuring that Gündelhart is listed in the inventory of Federal Inventory of Heritage Sites of Switzerland. When you hear the Zeppelin hum quietly, Lake Constance cannot be far away. But first we pass isolated farms, large nut trees and fruit groves. Then a grain silo, at least that’s what you might think from a distance. But it is the «Napoleon Tower» near Hohenrain. The original 19th century tower was 21 metres high. The new one is almost 40 metres high and has 208 larch wood steps to climb. At the top, there is a superb 360-degree panorama from Lake Constance across the Säntis to the giants in the Bernese Oberland.
There are then more and more apple and pear groves. «Mostindien» partly derives its name from the fruit growing here. After Wäldi we continue through the Tägerwiler and Nüwiler forests. The fir trees here are tall, and make the huge stones in the Schwaderloh boulder garden on the motorway look almost tiny. A host of attractive water lilies bathe in the two Bommerweiher ponds, and frogs leap up and down. You arrive at the entrance to Siegershausen, where the tour ends.
