Homeland museums

The Zentrum Paul Klee Museum combines art, music and creativity under one roof. In the undulating architecture of Renzo Piano, you will be immersed in the painter's work. Children create their own art in the Creaviva studio.

Four collections – Poster, Design, Graphics and Applied Art – encompass more than 500,000 objects at the Museum für Gestaltung. Switzerland’s foremost museum of design and visual communication is also one of the leading institutions in Europe, known for its fascinating temporary exhibitions.

Generally, museums are in big cities, or at least in highly visited villages, but hardly are they ever on a 2,100-meter-high mountain pass.

In the 19th century, the Freiamt region was famous for the quality of its straw products – from fine baskets to exquisite hat braiding that was exported around the world. Learn about this intriguing piece of local history at the Straw Museum in Wohlen, which offers fascinating guided tours.

Traditions such as the “Silvesterchläuse”, Alpine cattle drive, mountain farming, home life and string music form the focus of the museum, where visitors are encouraged to play their part. The museum also offers an insight into the typical domestic culture of Alpine farming and traditional handicraft workshops.
