Intro

At the St.Gallen Textile Museum, you can learn how Eastern Switzerland shaped the fashion world of the 19th century. You watch an embroiderer at a hand embroidery machine from 1890 and touch fabrics that once dressed queens and kings.

The Textile Museum St.Gallen at a glance

The founding of the museum was an initiative of the Commercial Directorate, which collected fabric samples from all over the world from 1863 onwards as inspiration for the embroidery industry. Today, the collection comprises around 56,000 objects such as historical fabrics, lace, pattern books and costumes, making it one of the most important textile collections in Switzerland.

What to experience

Discover embroidery, lace and fashion design (1.5-2 hours)

The permanent exhibition sheds light on textile production in Eastern Switzerland and shows highlights from the collection: Medieval pictorial embroidery, handmade lace and photographs from Swiss fashion studios. The special exhibitions address current issues in fashion and textile design.

Experience the hand embroidery machine in operation

Watch the historic hand embroidery machine from 1890 at work. It is one of the few still functional in the world. Over a width of 2.25 meters, 156 needles guide the thread at the same time, while an embroiderer scans the template with the so-called pantograph. So you can see how filigree patterns slowly emerge from precise movements.

  • Good to know: Current screening dates can be found on the museum's website.

Get creative yourself

Grab the KARO sketchbook with your children at the entrance and record what inspires you. Your children follow the stuffed mice Elli and Chilli on their missions through the rooms with the search and drawing booklet. Colouring sheets are available for the little ones and there are workshops and guided tours around the world of textiles.
