This is Samnaun
Samnaun offers duty-free shopping, skiing across the border into Austria and numerous hiking trails and mountain bike routes in summer. The high mountain valley lies in eastern Switzerland, in the canton of Graubünden.
Discover Samnaun
The villages of Samnaun lie on the valley floor, surrounded by dense forests and peaks rising above 3,000 metres. In Ravaisch and Samnaun-Dorf, you’ll find large hotels with wooden balconies and plenty of shops. The picturesque hamlet of Plan is home to whitewashed farmhouses with decorated corners. One of them houses the Chasa Retica valley museum, where you can learn about rural life in the past. The 17th-century building combines traditional Engadin architecture with influences from the Austrian Tyrol.
Skiing to Ischgl
The Silvretta Arena ski area stretches from Samnaun to Ischgl in Austria. With 239 kilometres of pistes, it is one of the largest ski areas in the Eastern Alps. From Samnaun-Ravaisch, the Twinliner cable car takes you up to Alptrider Sattel. It was the world’s first cable car with double-decker cabins. At its valley station, you can set off on long ski runs in both countries.
Duty-free shopping
In the past, the only road to Samnaun led through Austria, and customs duties were charged on all imports. This made food considerably more expensive, so the valley was granted duty-free status in 1892. Today, around 40 shops in Samnaun offer goods such as perfume and spirits at lower prices. If you continue into the Swiss customs territory, the usual duty-free allowances apply.
Around Samnaun
PostBus connects Samnaun with the Lower Engadin, travelling briefly through Austria along the way. After about an hour, you reach Scuol and the Bogn Engiadina mineral baths. Here you can relax in warm pools and the sauna. At the entrance to the baths, a walking route begins that leads to five village fountains flowing with mineral water. Bring a cup if you would like to taste the water.
Experience Samnaun for less
Stay at least one night and you’ll receive the
Samnaun Guest Card. In summer, it includes the mountain lifts as far as Ischgl and admission to the Alpenquell adventure pool in Samnaun-Compatsch. In winter, the card gives you a discount on your ski pass.
