In 1959 Tinguely presented for the first time, in Paris, his Méta-Matics, drawing machines which beholders are asked to actuate themselves. A felt pen clamped onto a moving mount strikes a sheet of paper, also on a moving mount, in various places: an abstract drawing arises amid the machine’s clattering noise. The user of the mechanical sculpture influences the result by freely selecting activation duration and by changing the color pens. Thus, with his Méta-Matics, Tinguely invited beholders to take part in an interactive art action.
