Intro

The Engstligen Waterfalls, which fall 600 metres deep into the valley, are a natural spectacle in a class of its own. As the second highest waterfalls in Switzerland, they have been under cantonal nature conservation since 1948.

The Engstligen Falls at a glance

The Engstligen Falls south of Adelboden are among the highest and most water-rich waterfalls in Switzerland. They have been protected since 1948 and are listed in the Federal Inventory of Landscapes of National Importance. The waterfalls carry the most water during the snowmelt in early summer.

What to experience

Loop trail to the lower waterfall (35 minutes)

Start at the Adelboden Chäli bus stop and follow the forest path along the Engstlige stream. You walk past the Chälistein and reach the lower waterfall, whose water splashes thunderously on the valley floor here. The path is easy to walk on and leads to the valley station of the cable car.

  • Good to know: The circular trail is accessible from May to October.
  • Tip: On the way back from the waterfall there is a fire pit for a picnic.

Upper waterfall circular hiking trail (1 hour)

Take the cable car to the Engstligenalp and follow the circular route along the upper waterfall. The path leads between flower meadows and bushes down to the roaring mountain stream. At a vantage point, a mobile phone holder is waiting for the perfect photo.

  • Good to know: Wear sturdy shoes, the path can be wet and slippery.

Ascent through the rock face (2 hours)

The mountain hiking trail up to Engstligenalp leads you from the valley station through the steep rock face past the waterfall. The brave climb to the alp via via ferrata, the necessary equipment is available for rent. Once at the top, the view of the largest plateau in the Swiss Alps opens up to you. You can return comfortably with the gondola lift.

  • Good to know: The combined ticket includes equipment rental and descent with the cable car.
  • Tip: In early summer, you can experience an alpine procession with 500 cows on the hiking trail.
