Intro
Take the Piz Corvatsch and Furtschellas cable cars to the Upper Engadine high mountains. At the Corvatsch mountain station, you face the glaciers of the Bernina Group at 3303 metres. From Furtschellas you hike into the Val Fex.
The Piz Corvatsch & Furtschellas Mountain Railway at a glance
The Pia Corvatsch and Furtschellas cable cars lead from 2 sides to the same mountain massif: From Silvaplana-Surlej to Corvatsch, from Sils Maria to Furtschellas. In winter, 120 kilometres of slopes, the Corvatsch Park and snow await you until the end of April and in summer an extensive network of hiking trails.
What to experience
Drive to the Corvatsch mountain station (15 minutes)
The Corvatsch cable car takes you from Surlej to the highest mountain station in the canton of Graubünden with a change at the Murtèl middle station at 3303 metres. From the viewing terrace, the view extends over the glaciers of the Bernina massif to Piz Bernina and Piz Palü and deep below lies the Upper Engadine Lake District.
- Good to know: Operates from the end of June to mid-October and from the end of November to April.
- Tip: Pack warm clothes; at over 3000 meters it is very cool even in summer.
Skiing at night on the Snow Night
Every Friday in the winter season, floodlights illuminate the 4.2-kilometre-long slope from the Murtèl middle station to Surlej. It is considered the longest illuminated downhill run in Switzerland. Carve your turns in the snow and look forward to a fondue or a pizza from the wood-fired oven waiting for you below.
- Good to know: The slope opens at 7 p.m. and closes at 1 or 2 a.m., depending on the month.
- Tip: Reserve a table in advance for the fondue at the valley station.
Hike from Furtschellas middle station to Hotel Fex (3 hours)
From the Furtschellas middle station, you climb steeply uphill, past Alp Munt to Lej Sgrischus, the highest point of the tour. At the lake you can watch chamois in the scree slopes. Afterwards, the path leads down into the quiet Fex Valley to the historic Hotel Fex, a house from the beginnings of Alpine tourism.
- Good to know: At the Hotel Fex you can stop by the fireplace and regional cuisine.
- Tip: Take the horse-drawn carriage from the Hotel Fex back to Sils.
