Montreux Lakeside
Overview
Intro
Walk along Lake Geneva on the Montreux waterfront and gaze across the water to the surrounding mountains. The path takes you past the Freddie Mercury statue to Chillon Castle.
The Montreux Lakeside at a glance
The promenade runs for 7 kilometres from Clarens via Montreux to Territet on Lake Geneva in the Canton of Vaud. The mild climate allows palm trees, cypresses and exotic flowers to flourish, which is why the path is also called "Quai des Fleurs". The Montreux Jazz Festival takes place here in July and the Montreux Riviera Noël Christmas market during Advent.
What to experience
Stroll along the Quai des Fleurs (1-2 hours)
Follow the lakeshore, past colorful flower beds and Belle Époque facades. Benches by the water and cafés invite you to take breaks. Between December and May, the city gardening department places large figures made of conifer branches on the promenade, each year on a different theme.
- Good to know: The path is flat, asphalted and car-free.
- Tip: Extend the walk on the riverside path to Vevey or Villeneuve.
Visit the Freddie Mercury Statue (30-45 minutes)
At the covered market on the Place du Marché, you will stand in front of the 3-meter-high bronze statue of Freddie Mercury, who lived in Montreux for a long time and made music. Fans lay flowers and letters here. Just a 5-minute walk away, the permanent exhibition "Queen: The Studio Experience" in the Casino, the band's former recording studio.
- Good to know: The exhibition is open daily, admission is free.
- Tip: In September, Queen cover bands will play at the Freddie Celebration Days.
Walk to Chillon Castle (45 minutes)
From the Montreux jetty, the lakeside path takes you past the port of Territet to the rocky island with Chillon Castle. The moated castle is considered the most visited architectural monument in Switzerland. Inside you walk through halls, dungeons and corridors, outside you look out over the lake and the mountains.
- Good to know: The promenade is freely accessible and a visit to the castle costs admission.
- Tip: To get back to Montreux, take the boat, bus 201 or train.
