Rhaetian Railway
Overview
Intro
The Rhaetian Railway runs through the entire canton of Graubünden. Its Albula and Bernina lines are an UNESCO World Heritage Site and you can travel on the two world-famous panoramic trains, the Glacier Express and the Bernina Express, via its network.
The Rhaetian Railway at a glance
The Rhaetian Railway provides access to Graubünden over 385 kilometres with tracks only 1 metre wide. A first section went into operation in 1889 and today the network extends from Chur via Davos to St. Moritz and the Engadine. On the Arosa line, the trains roll across the road through the middle of Chur. The electricity is always supplied by hydropower.
What to experience
Cross the Landwasser Viaduct (1.5 hours)
The Albula Line leads from Thusis up into the Engadine and overcomes over 1000 metres in altitude without cogwheel support. On the ride, you can photograph their landmark: The Landwasser Viaduct is 65 metres high and flows in an arc directly into a rock tunnel. In addition, there are several helical and spiral tunnels.
- Good to know: A normal train ticket is sufficient for the journey over the viaduct.
- Tip: Walk from Filisur Station to the viaduct and take a selfie.
Travel with Glacier Express and Bernina Express (4-8 hours)
The Bernina Express connects Chur with the Italian Tirano, the Glacier Express St. Moritz with Zermatt. Both drive over sections of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and have carriages with large panoramic windows. You'll travel across the Alps, across hundreds of bridges.
- Good to know: A seat reservation is required for the panorama trains.
- Tip: Tirano is located in Italy, don't forget your ID.
Take the historic train to Filisur (40 minutes)
From Davos, you will travel in restored wagons from the 1920s through the Zügenschlucht, over the Wiesner Viaduct and down into the Albula Valley. An open car also travels, you can hear the wheels rattling and feel the wind. The train costs the normal fare, it is not barrier-free due to its age.
- Good to know: The nostalgic train only runs from May to October.
- Tip: Reserve seats for groups of 10 or more.
