Chemin de Chasseral
Overview
Intro
This hike offers a magnificent 360° view of the entire Bernese Jura and much further afield. Around the Chasseral with its huge antenna and in the heart of the regional nature park of the same name, farmhouses, wooded pastures and local specialities wait to be discovered.
Description
The hike starts at the hotel Chasseral and descends to the Combe Grède nature reserve on the north side of the Chasseral massif. The gorge divides the mountain ridge above Saint-Imier lengthwise into two parts. Chamois and marmots live in the rugged rock faces. Pilgrim falcons can also be observed from time to time - it's worth keeping your eyes open. From Les Pré aux Auges, the lowest point of the loop tour, a short ascent leads to Les Limes. There’s a splendid view over the gorge on this next section.
With the valley of Saint-Imier before you, the hike continues on an even path through some of the typical wooded pastures. Areas planted with trees and meadows alternate like a mosaic. The first of the numerous métairies, the typical inns of the Bernese Jura, are already in sight. Each has its own speciality, for example homemade ice cream, rösti, or cheese. During the season of the "Bouchoyade", there are traditional dishes with freshly butchered meat on offer. In the summer months, some farms produce the Chasseral DOP Gruyère d'alpage cheese.
The ascent to the summit continues on a gentle slope, first on the Petit Chasseral flank. At the Vacherie de Nods, the path then climbs up to the ridge of the Chasseral. Its landmark, the 155-metre-high transmitter tower, can be seen from far away. At the top, the panorama opens up over the entire Swiss plateau and the Alps, towards the Vosges and the Black Forest. The flora of the Chasseral is quite diverse as various plants from the plains also grow in the pastures in the summit region, and alpine plants can be found as well. The hotel Chasseral is situated close by. The destination is reached via the summit at an elevation of 1606 metres.
