Rheintaler Höhenweg
Overview
Intro
Beneath the eastern Churfirst peaks, the upland moor landscape forms a large alp with the Ölberg the highest point on the Rheintaler-Höhenweg. Rock faces dominate the horizon. In a striking basin: Voralp with Voralpsee lake and show dairy.
Description
Wildhaus, the highest resort village in Toggenburg, is nestled between the Alpstein and Churfirsten mountain ranges. The ascent to Oberdorf starts at Lisighaus. If you prefer, you can take the chairlift in this section to save your legs 200 metres of altitude. But from there on after, there’s no way around the climbing. To the right of the trail to the Älpligatter and Lochgatter, there is a special forest reserve. It covers the areas of Langenwald, Moosbühel and Tischenriet. To the south, there are relatively flat marshes, light woodland, Alpine meadows and the highland moor of Gamperfin. In this area, you will also summit the Ölberg, the highest point on the Rheintaler Höhenweg route.
The section leading to the Höhi-Voralp Alpine dairy proceeds along a surfaced road. Two and a half hours into the walk, now is a convenient time to take a rest. It’s also worth taking a detour to the nearby pre-Alpine lake before continuing. Passing through the Lidmälwald and Piriwald woods, you will arrive at the meadow at Piribühel. In this area, you will be greeted by wonderful views of the Rhine Valley and the mountains of Liechtenstein.
Then comes the final climb through the Chelenwald and Buchser Hochwald woods, before the walk ends at the Berghaus Malbun. This hotel restaurant sits atop a beautiful sunny terrace with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, the Rhine Valley and Lake Constance.
