Overview
Intro
Uri’s Maderanertal is surrounded by rocky summits and glaciers, but is softened by its grassy pastures, waterfalls and wild berries. The run here above Golzerensee is uniquely rugged and sweet.
Description
A small cable car runs between Bristen in the valley and Golzern higher up. The gondola ride is followed by a steep climb from the upper station. Stopping to look down on Golzerensee, you’ll notice blueberry bushes at your feet.
Traversing the rocky Golzeralpen you reach the Windgällen Hut, commanding superb glacier views and surrounded by the 3,000-metre peaks of the Tödi, Oberalpstock and Gross Windgällen. Cows as well as llamas graze near the hut, offering some solace before you continue. Almost all downhill from here, the trail quickly leads to Berghotel Maderanertalrock, over rocks, across bridges and past waterfalls along the way. The hotel, built in 1864, signalled a growth in mountain tourism in Uri, and is still a place of both retreat and adventure today.
After reaching the river, follow the Chärstelenbach through the valley, past old wooden houses decorated with yellow Uri flags. It’s not just the river that sparkles here, as you’ll also find crystals on display at small stands along the lower route. Returning from nature, the trail widens to gravel, the gravel becomes road, and you’re back at the base of the funicular.
Tip from ALPSinsight: To make the day more challenging, take the trail directly up to Golzern for an added 560-metre gain.
