Intro

The trail first meanders across pastures and then above and along the ridge of the amazing Wandflue. With views of the Alps ranging from Säntis Mountain to Mont Blanc, the path crosses the high plateau. On the way back, you will pass a commemorative stone erected for Federal Councilor Willi Ritschard.

Description

Untergrenchenberg (1,295 MASL), which can be easily reached via public transport, is the starting point of the Wandflue-Trail.

It starts with a gently ascending path across fields, past the Grenchenberg pistes, and to the first outlook onto the Wandflue (1,383 MASL). The arête of the first Jura chain was created by a landslide some 20,000 years ago, caused by the retreat of the ice-age Rhone glacier, which together with the lateral Valais glaciers once reached approximately up to Wangen an der Aare. The mountain’s flank was left unsupported and slid away. The village of Bettlach stands on the mighty expanse of scree, which reaches to the River Aare. The rock stratum of the Wandflue which can now be seen is 180 million years old and once formed the sandy bottom of a shallow sea.

The path now descends slightly towards the alpine plateau formed by the Wandflue. The view of the Swiss Alps from the path along the arête is impressive: one can see from Mount Säntis to Mont Blanc. The way continues across the alpine plateau to the Obergrenchenberg mountain restaurant. Between Dolinen and Tannen, one soon reaches the Längschwang, where a memorial stone commemorates the life of Willi Ritschard. The popular Solothurn-based federal councillor collapsed and died on this spot while out on a Sunday hike on 16 October 1983. Here begins a steep descent to the ski lift’s valley station, followed by an equally steep climb up the Untergrenchenberg, the finishing and starting point of the tour.

An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
