Intro
Take the Polybahn from Zurich Central to the Polyterrasse of ETH. The red funicular is a piece of Zurich's city history and takes you up above the rooftops of the old town in 100 seconds.
The Polybahn at a glance
The Polybahn connects Central Square at Zurich Main Station with the Polyterrasse of ETH Zurich. In operation since 1889, it is one of the oldest funiculars in Switzerland. In the characteristic red carriages you overcome 41 meters in altitude and enjoy the view over the rooftops of the old town.
What to experience
Ride on the Polybahn (2 minutes)
The valley station of the Polybahn is located at the Central, a 5-minute walk from Zurich main station. In 100 seconds you will drive up to the Polyterrasse and see the rooftops of the old town below you. The cars offer space for 50 people each and run every 2 to 5 minutes.
- Good to know: The normal ZVV ticket is valid for the journey, no separate ticket required.
- Tip: The cars have an open platform – stand there for the best view.
Explore the Polyterrasse and ETH campus
At the top of the Polyterrasse you can look over Zurich's old town, the Limmat and Lake Zurich to the Alps. The terrace is freely accessible. Right next to it, the ETH campus invites you to visit. Personalities such as Albert Einstein taught and researched here.
- Good to know: The Polyterrasse is open to the public and free of charge.
- Tip: A few minutes' walk away is the Natural History Museum of the University of Zurich.
