Intro

Aarau is known as the city of beautiful gables. And the opportunities for shopping are just as varied and colourful as the lovingly painted undersides of its roofs. As both a traditional market town and modern shopping city, Aarau has a lot to offer for wants and needs of all kinds, no matter whether for every day or for a special occasion.

The colourful vegetables here have been carefully arranged on the market stalls, the baked goods are still hot, and the flowers fresh. Every Saturday, visitors to the vegetable market at the Graben in Aarau can expect a large selection of regional products. This is a place for encounters. A place where, all year round, locals and visitors alike do their weekend shopping, meet up for a chat or go for a coffee together afterwards. At Ccino, for example. This café and its cosy roof terrace are somewhat hidden away on the first floor of The Home Shop. Even so, it has long since ceased to be an insider’s tip.
From March to November, on the first Saturday of every month, the market is joined by Aarau’s beloved flea market. Bargains, treasures and whimsical items are just waiting to be discovered in and around the market hall.

Aside from its market, Aarau is also characterised by its high density of small shops and boutiques. These are often still owner-run, which is reflected in the lovingly selected range of exceptional products: from hand-picked teas and spices to sustainable clothing and decorative items for the home, you can find just about anything here.

The virtually car-free old town is compact and can be easily explored on foot. Along the water channels of the Stadtbach, you can stroll to your heart’s content.
If you find yourself if need of a break either during or after your shopping spree, simply take a seat in one of the city’s many cafés or restaurants. Here, too, the canton capital has a surprising variety to choose from. At Lockentopf, light, seasonal dishes are interpreted in a modern way. Ideal for a little snack to keep you going.
Or for a holiday feel, head to the Sevilla restaurant. Formerly run by immigrants, it serves up traditional Spanish tapas and specially selected wines.
And at Waldmeier, just a few streets away, the air is filled with the delicious aroma of Japanese ramen. This can be enjoyed alongside unusual cocktail creations.

Whether at the weekly market or in its cosy alleyways, in Aarau, tradition lives side by side with the trends. You’ll discover an enchanting charm here as well as surprising diversity.
