Zurich Self-Guided Detective Murder Mystery Game

The Zurich game begins at the Fraumünster, on the left bank of the river, and crosses the Rathausbrücke almost immediately. On the far side it follows the Limmatquai for a stretch before doubling back and climbing to the Lindenhof above the water. It is a self-guided murder mystery game, played on foot through central Zurich.

It works for families with children, groups of friends, couples and colleagues, and equally for one person playing alone. Teams are up to four, all looking at the same phone, and larger groups take an extra ticket per additional team. The old town is compact, but there are short climbs in it, the Lindenhof among them, so the walking is easy without being entirely flat. There is no guide and no fixed start time to work around.

The case is the murder of Balthasar. Clues surface as you move: a coded message to unpick, a photo task on the riverbank, a digital witness whose account of the evening keeps shifting. The stretch around St Peter Church is where the story takes a turn, and each answer removes a suspect.

With two or more teams in the field it turns into a straightforward race, and that is what makes it work as teambuilding for a group from the office. Break for lunch on the Limmatquai, pick it up again after, and close the case somewhere in Zurich.
