In former days, the WART inn, also referred to as a “Gesellenhaus” (journeyman’s hostel) in historical documents, was located further south on the edge of the Totenhalde area. It was built on its current site in 1684.

Description
In former days, the WART inn, also referred to as a “Gesellenhaus” (journeyman’s hostel) in historical documents, was located further south on the edge of the Totenhalde area. It was built on its current site in 1684.
On 2 February 1702, the WART journeyman’s hostel caught fire and burned to the ground. Fortunately, the family living there escaped safely, but they lost all their furniture. Valuable documents and books belonging to the community were also destroyed. The inn and journeyman’s hostel was soon rebuilt on the original foundations in 1703. All council and community meetings were held here. For around 100 years, from the middle of the 18th century to the middle of the 19th century, it was also home to the first local school. The building underwent major renovations from 1926 to 1928. All that remained of the original bar was the symmetrical walnut counter dating back to 1826. In 1973, there was another thorough restoration of the WART building. The facade paintings by Heinrich Appenzeller were restored by painter Hans Baggenstos. Leaseholders Peter R. Egli and Daniel Kolbe have been running the WART since November 2017.
